GM Issues Major Recall in Canada for 6.2L L87 Engine Over Risk of Engine Failure: Affects Nearly 50,000 Trucks and SUVs

GM Issues Major Recall in Canada for 6.2L L87 Engine Over Risk of Engine Failure

General Motors (GM) has announced a widespread recall in Canada impacting nearly 50,000 vehicles equipped with its powerful 6.2L V8 L87 engine. The recall, which affects full-size pickup trucks and SUVs from model years 2021 to 2024, was issued due to serious manufacturing defects that could lead to loss of propulsion, engine damage, or total engine failure.

This decision follows growing scrutiny from lawsuits, internal investigations, and reports of repeated engine failures, raising concern among owners and prompting GM to take immediate corrective action.

Why the Recall Was Issued

According to GM, certain 6.2L L87 engines were built with defective connecting rods and/or crankshafts, which are critical components of internal engine function. These defects can result in:

  • Loss of power or propulsion
  • Severe internal engine damage
  • Total engine failure
  • Increased risk of collisions due to sudden power loss

Though GM has not disclosed the precise nature of the defect, it confirms that the issue originates from manufacturing inconsistencies in some of the engine components.

  • If no issues are found, the vehicle will:
    • Receive an oil and filter change
    • Be refilled with high-viscosity 0W-40 Mobil 1 Supercar oil (instead of the originally recommended 0W-20)
    • Get a new oil fill cap indicating the updated oil type
  • If defects are detected, the engine will be repaired or replaced at no cost to the vehicle owner.

Stop Sale Order Issued

GM has issued a stop sale order for all affected models currently in dealership inventory. This means:
