Canada Implement New Rules for Post-Graduation Work Permits Eligibility Criteria

Starting November 1, Canada is changing the eligibility criteria for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). This policy shift means that graduates from public colleges will only qualify for a PGWP if their field of study is connected to occupations in long-term shortage in Canada. This initiative aims to align the education system with the labor market needs of the country, making it essential for prospective international students to choose their study programs wisely.

Overview of the Policy Change

The new PGWP eligibility criteria announced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will significantly impact many graduates. The updated rules are intended to support Canadian industries experiencing labor shortages by facilitating a smoother transition for international graduates into relevant employment sectors.

Sectors with Labor Shortages

IRCC recently revealed the full list of study programs tied to occupations in five critical sectors facing labor shortages in Canada. These sectors include:

  1. Healthcare
  2. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) occupations
  3. Trade occupations
  4. Transportation occupations
  5. Agriculture and agri-food occupations

These sectors are also targeted for permanent residency under the Express Entry category-based selections. However, a broader range of study programs linked to various in-demand occupations are now eligible for PGWP, encouraging graduates to focus on careers that will be beneficial both for them and the Canadian economy.
