On Thursday, May 28, Sunwing Airlines officially ceased its operations, completing a two-year integration process with WestJet. This strategic merger aims to strengthen WestJet’s foothold in the leisure travel market, giving Canadian travelers expanded access to popular sun destinations under a single, streamlined operation.
The completion of the integration brings all Sunwing jet aircraft under WestJet’s Air Operator Certificate (AOC). This includes 18 aircraft from Sunwing, along with 16 former Swoop planes and 9 from Lynx Air—consolidating WestJet’s position as the second-largest airline in Canada.

Background: WestJet’s Acquisition of Sunwing
WestJet officially acquired Sunwing in May 2023 following the Canadian government’s approval of the merger in March that same year. The move was designed to consolidate the leisure travel market in Canada, creating a more competitive and comprehensive airline capable of offering broader flight connectivity and better pricing on vacation packages.

The full integration of Sunwing Airlines into WestJet marks a significant shift in Canada’s aviation landscape. Vacation travelers will benefit from a more unified and customer-friendly experience, with a wide range of destinations and flexible travel options now available through a single airline platform.
