Health Canada Recall: These Kids’ Products Linked to Brain Damage Risk

Health Canada Recall These Kids' Products Linked to Brain Damage Risk

Health Canada has expanded an urgent recall of Boutique Chic-branded children’s jewellery after laboratory testing revealed dangerously high levels of lead — a toxic metal known to cause permanent developmental harm in young children. This recall, first issued on May 6, 2025, now includes spinner necklaces, bracelets, and rings that were widely available across Canada between January and May 2025.

Why This Matters

Lead exposure, even in very small amounts, can be extremely harmful to children, especially infants and toddlers who may chew or suck on jewellery. Health Canada warns that elevated lead levels can lead to:

  • Developmental delays
  • Brain damage
  • Anemia
  • Organ damage

These serious and often irreversible health consequences make it illegal under Canadian law to manufacture, import, or sell children’s jewellery exceeding 90 mg/kg of lead, the national safety limit set by the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act.

Health Canada’s Testing and Recall Action

Health Canada’s routine product safety testing program revealed that these items far exceeded the legal lead limit. Although no injuries or health incidents have been reported as of May 15, 2025, the agency urges immediate action from consumers.

What Parents and Caregivers Should Do

Health Canada advises all parents and caregivers to:

  • Immediately take the recalled jewellery away from children.
  • Return the items to the place of purchase for a full refund.
  • Do NOT resell, donate, or give away these products — doing so is prohibited by law.
