$16M Mayfield Road Expansion to Triple Lanes in Brampton: Major Traffic Relief and Housing Growth Expected by 2026

New Rules and Laws Coming to Protect Ontario Construction Workers in 2025

Brampton, ON – A major infrastructure project is underway in Brampton, with the city set to triple the number of lanes on one of its busiest roadways to address rising traffic congestion and support future housing developments. The $16.1 million Mayfield Road expansion project was officially launched during a groundbreaking event held on Friday, marking a significant milestone in Peel Region’s long-term transportation strategy.

From Two to Six Lanes: What’s Changing?

The initial phase of the project will see Mayfield Road widened from two lanes to six lanes between Hurontario Street and Chinguacousy Road. This critical 3.5-kilometre stretch is located in northwest Brampton, an area experiencing rapid urbanization and housing growth.

According to Brampton West MPP Amarjot Sandhu, who attended the event alongside Mayor Patrick Brown and city councillors, the expansion will:

  • Ease current and future traffic congestion
  • Support housing developments under Ontario’s broader “More Homes Built Faster” plan
  • Enhance infrastructure and safety for local families and commuters

“This project will ease traffic, support new housing, and improve infrastructure for families in our growing community,” Sandhu said on social media.

Multi-Phase, Multi-Year Project

This expansion is just one phase of a broader eight-phase initiative that will eventually see Mayfield Road widened from Heritage Road to Highway 50, a total stretch of more than 15 kilometres. Depending on the segment, the road will be expanded to between four and six lanes.

The project is being funded through the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program (MHIP), a provincial program designed to help municipalities upgrade infrastructure to meet new housing targets.

  • Phase 1 (Hurontario to Chinguacousy): Now under construction, with an expected completion date in 2026
  • Full Project Completion: Estimated by 2031, pending future phases and approvals

Peel Region’s $502M Growth Plan

The Mayfield Road expansion is part of a much larger investment in regional infrastructure. In 2023, the Region of Peel allocated over $502.1 million for growth-related capital projects. This includes:

  • Road widening projects across Brampton and Mississauga
  • Intersection upgrades
  • Active transportation infrastructure such as bike lanes and pedestrian-friendly design

These investments are critical in keeping pace with Peel Region’s status as one of Canada’s fastest-growing urban areas. The roadwork is also tied to Ontario’s housing acceleration strategy, ensuring infrastructure is in place to support tens of thousands of new homes expected over the next decade.

Why It Matters: Supporting Brampton’s Housing Boom

Brampton is projected to grow by over 300,000 people by 2041, according to municipal planning data. The Mayfield Road corridor lies at the heart of many new subdivisions, schools, and commercial zones, and improving traffic flow is key to preventing future bottlenecks.

The $16M Mayfield Road expansion is not just about paving roads—it’s about preparing Brampton for the future. With better infrastructure, new homes can be built faster, families can move more easily, and businesses can flourish in a well-connected city.

What’s Next?

Residents should expect construction delays and detours during the build phase. The City of Brampton and the Region of Peel have committed to providing regular updates on construction progress, timelines, and road closures via official channels.
