TD Bank Financial Group thanks customers with large tree donation in Gatineau
160,000 trees for reforestation across Canada announced on Customer Appreciation Day
Gatineau, QC, June 2, 2006 — TD Bank Financial Group announced today that as part of its annual Customer Appreciation Day, it is partnering with Tree Canada to plant 160,000 trees - 40,000 in the Gatineau area.
"We wanted to thank our customers for their business in a way that would give back to the local community," said Jean Francois Laurin, Branch Manager at TD Canada Trust's 750 Montee Paiement location. "Gatineau is currently undergoing a green renaissance and TD is pleased to be able to help enhance the landscape around this beautiful city."
TD is donating $400,000 to Tree Canada to plant 160,000 trees in select locations throughout the country that have lost large stands of trees to natural disasters or that require reforestation to improve their environment including wildlife habitats. Plantings will also take place in Sudbury, Ontario which is restoring forests adjacent to mining sites; Kelowna, B.C. where many trees have been destroyed by fire; and the Halifax, Nova Scotia area, where many trees have been devastated in recent years by ice storms and hurricanes.
The environmental impact of 160,000 trees is significant. Over their lifetime, these trees will absorb 93,418 tonnes of carbon dioxide and will filter other pollutants, such as carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide and ozone. Each mature tree will lift nearly 400 litres of water out of the ground and discharge it into the air daily, cooling the air while producing life-giving oxygen. Trees reduce water run-off and erosion, keep streams cleaner, recharge ground water, and provide habitat for wildlife.
"This very large cross-Canada tree planting effort adds to TD's reputation as a corporate environmental leader," said Jeff Monty, President, Tree Canada. "Together with TD, we're striving to "Grow Clean Air," making our communities greener while creating a living legacy for generations to come."
In addition to the donation of trees, TD Canada Trust and TD Waterhouse are holding local Customer Appreciation Day celebrations in branches across Canada today.
